Thuraya

Thuraya offers a cost-effective regional satellite-based mobile telephone services. The system consists of the US 1.1 billion dollar satellite (GMPCS) system delivered by U.S. satellite manufacturer Boeing Satellite Systems (formerly Hughes). Launched aboard a Sea Launch Zenit-3SL rocket near the equator in the middle of the Pacific Ocean in the 3rd quarter of 2000.  The satellite current operates in geo-synchronous orbit some 36,000 kms above the earth, at 44 degrees east above the equator. The system includes a second ground based backup system and a third that could be utilized for system expansion.

Thuraya provides coverage to some 99 countries in Europe, the Middle East, North and Central Africa, the Indian Subcontinent and Central Asia. Service is provided through dynamic dual mode handsets and satellite payphones. Ssubscribers access Thuraya's mobile satellite system through national mobile networks, and Thuraya’s system whenever their preferred national network is out of reach. The Primary Gateway is located in Sharjah, UAE serving the entire Thuraya coverage area. Other gateways will be established as necessary.

Thuraya offers satellite, cellular (GSM) service and location determination system (GPS) in a single dual mode handset that is lightweight, elegant and easy to use. The dynamic handset offers voice, data, fax and short messaging services.  

Designed for a lifespan of 12 to 15 years, Thuraya’s satellite is in geo-synchronous orbit, positioned 36,000 kms above the earth, at 44 degrees east above the equator. The Thuraya system includes a spare ground satellite that may be launched at a later date as a back up and a third that could be used to expand system capacity.

The Primary Gateway in Sharjah, UAE, serves the entire Thuraya coverage area, and plans are underway to establish additional national gateways at other locations as necessary.
